Apartment Design For Apartment Living: Apartments can be tricky! Since they are a fraction of a building and not the whole building, like a single family resident, you’ll have to figure the facing direction of your apartment based on the apartment building itself.

There are 24 facing direction in feng shui. Four cardinal direction which are South, North, East and West and four cross directions which are Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest. Each of these directions have three segments making up 24 different possibilities. Each one of these segments has there own facing direction period chart. This is a very important piece of “Flying Star Feng Shui”. Accuracy in the facing direction is imperative. I always suggest using a Global Positioning System or GPS compass set to true North for determining facing direction.

The front of your apartment building can also be a little tricky to determine sometimes. Sometimes it is very obvious where the front of your apartment buildings is. But here are some rules for determining the front of your building:

The side of the building that faces a natural lake, river or ocean will always be the facing direction of your building. In this case, the street side or any man made environment would take a lesser role.
The side of the building that has the most natural open view.
Natural landmarks such as the ocean, river, lake or mountains, will always be more powerful than man made landmarks, such as roads, parking lots and alleys.
The side of your building that is on the busiest street with the most traffic, a man made river.
The obvious main entrance to your building, if it has one.

Once you’ve determined the side of your building that is the front, then stand with your back parallel to the front of your building and write down the GPS degrees relative to True north. That is your facing direction. Now all you have to do is find the correlating degree value on the facing direction chart. That will determine which facing direction chart you should use for the period that your building was built.
